Inspiration

Kathryn

For as long as I can remember contemporary art and craft has played a part in my life as a means of expression and its associated therapy. Nature and the changing seasons offer endless artistic opportunities. Coastal holidays spanning from childhood provide inspiration; the ever changing sea, sky and light providing a backdrop for discovery. Memories of family, places and people also infuse my work with colour and symbolism.

Fascinated by surface textures my workshop and home are filled with curiosities from trips and foraging expeditions along with the usual paraphernalia associated with art. Recycled and new materials offer endless opportunities to experiment and I blend these with traditional and contemporary making techniques.

Originally trained in textiles I found myself drawn to develop and extend my interest in design through ceramics, metal work, stained glass and then jewellery. Resisting traditional stereotypes and enjoying challenges my work ranges from electroforming, enamelling and fused glass to quilting and embroidery.

Since graduating with first class honours in Contemporary Craft at Coventry University I have exhibited widely including London, Birmingham, Stourbridge, Leamington, Coventry and Solihull. I have many pieces of work held by private collectors.

As immediate past Chairperson and member of Solihull Artists Forum I enjoy many opportunities to liaise/work with professional local artists and organisations including Solihull Arts Complex.I have similar benefits as a member of the RBSA, along with membership of the Leamington Studio Artists, the Embroiders Guild and Genesis.

Working from my studio at home I design and make work for exhibitions. More recently I have produced selected work for retail including a range of jewellery for the National Trust at Baddesley Clinton.
Having a strong background in community arts supported by qualifications including PGCE, IfL membership and Silver/ Bronze Arts Award Trainer I work for Solihull College and other educational establishments. I enjoy facilitating the creativity and confidence of individuals. I also work independently to create workshops and sessions for many diverse groups and organisations with the aim to promote engagement, inclusivity and enjoyment.
